Located in western SoDak, Custer is a town of just over 2,000 residents that is arguably the most South Dakota town ever.
Founded in 1875, Custer was - like so many other South Dakota communities - a profitable mining town that was discovered by namesake Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, who, in turn, kicked off the infamous Black Hills Gold Rush.
While hundreds of other South Dakota mining towns went under after the nearby veins went dry, Custer continues to thrive, thanks to its local shopping, sightseeing, and dining opportunities, plus its close proximity to some of the most famous places in the state.
When you stay in Custer, make a plan to see everything you can, as the aforementioned Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Wind Cave are a mere minutes away from downtown.
In addition to these famous landmarks, Custer is also close to some of the best gambling in the region, as well as the must-see Custer State Park, which comes complete with some scenic Black Hills drives that you will not find anywhere else.
Not sure where to stay during your Custer excursion? Lucky for you, there is a place for every taste and budget, including motels and hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, and so much more.
