If you have ever visited the small town of Spearfish, you know that it is about as charming as it gets, but do you want to know what is even cooler? Spearfish was not only named one of the coolest small towns in South Dakota but in the entire country:
"Big cities like New York and Los Angeles may get most of the attention, but America is filled with small towns and communities that have long formed the backbone of the nation," shares Far and Wide, which consulted such publications as Reader's Digest, Architectural Digest, and The Travel Channel to come up with their findings.
According to Far and Wide, Spearfish cannot be missed for several reasons, including its close proximity to the Black Hills, plus outdoor recreation galore, Black Hills State University, and its thriving artistic community.
Founded in 1876, the Spearfish area was originally used by bands of Sioux and other Native Americans before becoming a hot spot for the Black Hills Gold Rush and, later on, tourism.
Whether you take in all of the outdoor recreation, dine and shop around town, or check out all of the historical sites, you, too, are sure to fall in love with Spearfish!
