It’s official (though we have known it in our hearts for years): The Black Hills are becoming a top destination for out-of-state residents! Why? Is it our low cost of living? Is it our friendly residents and our Midwest nice-ness? Is it our incredible landscape and landmarks? It is all of the above and more:
As per United Van Lines, the Mount Rushmore State saw a whopping 62.3% inbound and 37.7% outbound in terms of moving, with 17.86% of new residents citing retirement, 7.14% saying health, 21.43% citing family, 17.86% stating lifestyle, and 50% reporting job opportunities.
In terms of age ranges, more than 28.57% of inbound movers are between the ages of 35 to 44, 21.43% are between the ages of 45 to 54, 25% are between the ages of 55 to 64, and 25% are ages 65 and older.
Let's talk about money, shall we? Another interesting statistic to come out of the United Van Lines’ 2020 National Migration Study is the estimated income of inbound residents, with 5.88% reporting both $0 to $49,999 AND $50,000 to $74,999, 35.29% at $75,000 to $99,999, 17.65% reporting $100,000 to $149,999, and 35.29% making $150,000 or more.
In addition to South Dakota, the United Van Lines’ 2020 National Migration Study lists a handful of other states as the most moved to in 2020, including South Carolina (64%), Oregon (63%), and Arizona (62%, pictured).
