South Dakota’s veterans deserve the most peaceful, beautiful place when it comes time to lay them to rest. The Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis fits the bill. Soon, this beautiful cemetery will be even larger, allowing for more of our nation’s heroes to be laid to rest here.
The Black Hills National Cemetery was established in 1948. It's located in Sturgis, at 20901 Pleasant Valley Drive.
One of three national cemeteries in South Dakota, the Black Hills National Cemetery is a beautiful place. Surrounded by the beauty of the Black Hills, the cemetery's grounds are spotless, quiet, and peaceful.
The men and women who were laid to rest here served their country with honor. Their service required many personal sacrifices, and some made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to uphold our freedom.
About 28,600 veterans and family members are currently interred at the 107-acre cemetery. In addition to veterans, their children and eligible spouses are allowed to be laid to rest here.
In January, 2018, the U.S. Senate passed a bill that provides an additional 200 acres for the Black Hills National Cemetery, effectively tripling its size. This is wonderful news for veterans who wish to be interred here.
Whether they died in combat, or fought with honor and returned home to later die of natural causes, the men and women who so bravely fought for our country deserve to be honored and remembered. The next time you're in Sturgis, pay this cemetery a visit.
