Black Elk Peak Trail Is Highest Point Hike In South Dakota

South Dakota is home to some of our nation’s greatest peaks and valleys, and there’s no better way to see our beautiful state than to hike through its forests and parks. This trail in the Black Hills leads to the highest point in South Dakota, and standing among the clouds will have you feeling on top of the world. Get ready for views like never before, but be sure to pack water and wear comfortable shoes because this hike isn’t the easiest, but it sure pays off.

To find the best views in all of South Dakota, your best bet is the Black Elk Peak trail.

Formally known as Harney Peak, this trail hits an elevation of over 7,200 feet, so you're sure to be up in the clouds. Starting at the beautiful Sylvan Lake, you can either take trail 4 part way up, or trail 9 to head to the top.

This hike is considered moderate, so be sure to take your time and pack snacks and water. On the way up, you'll see beautiful rock formations such as Cathedral Spires.

Upon your hike, you'll run into many stone stairways and interesting pathways.

Be careful in the winter months, as the steps can get slippery, and it's a long way down.

Once you get to the top, you'll find Harney Lookout. The tower was built as a fire lookout in 1932, but is no longer in use for fire watching.

Here, you'll find the most spectacular views in all of South Dakota. This is the highest you can get, and upon your hike you'll gain 1,407 feet in elevation.

Remember to be respectful, as you're standing upon sacred ground.

Black Elk Peak is sacred to the Lakota people. Black Elk was a legendary medicine man who climbed this mountain at the age of nine and had an incredible vision that changed his life forever.

It's not hard to see why this spot is so special to the native people of our state, and reaching the top can feel life-changing even today.

This trail in the Black Hills is as high up as you can get, and it's so worth the effort.
