If you were born and raised here, you know there is no shortage of beautiful drives around the Mount Rushmore State. Whether you are looking for something short and sweet or long and dramatic, you are guaranteed to find it here… isn’t it great? When it comes to getting the most out of your scenic winter drive, however, there is only one road we can endorse, as it is one of the most beautiful in not just South Dakota, but in the country:
You know all there is to know about Badlands National Park and its must-see layered rock formations, but did you know that the area is also home to...
...the best winter drive in South Dakota?!
Also known as South Dakota Highway 240, the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway runs for 40 miles and winds through some of the most beautiful parts of this National Park.
Is it just me or has the snow never looked as beautiful as it does here?
In addition to the drive itself, Loop Road also houses 16 designated scenic overlooks, so be sure to pack your coat and hat!
Need another reason to drive through the Badlands? You are almost guaranteed to see some sort of local wildlife, including big horn sheep, buffalo, and mule deer.
Please note: Since Loop Road does run through a national park, there is a fee for entrance, which is $25 per private vehicle.
Badlands National Park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
