In my opinion, some of the most magnificent of animals are that of wild horses which, lucky for us South Dakotans, are easily accessible here in the Mount Rushmore State! If you want to get an up close look at these amazing creatures, look no further than this South Dakota wild horse sanctuary that is one of the last of its kind in America:
Located in Hot Springs is the incredible Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, which invites you to "Enjoy the herds of sleek, healthy mustangs running where wild flowers bloom in profusion, and the sky goes on forever."
Celebrating 30 years, the Wild Horse Sanctuary was founded in 1988 by Dayton O. Hyde and is situated on a whopping 11,000 acres of pristine land dedicated to range preservation.
Where do the horses in the sanctuary come from? All of the four-legged animals at the sanctuary were born in the wild and may have also been rescued, sanctuary-born descendants, or part of a rare-breed preservation.
There are several different ways to see the horses at the Black Hills Sanctuary, which vary from two-hour guided bus tours...
Bus tours run March 1st through October 31st.
...once-in-a-lifetime photography tours...
As per the BHWHS, "Native Wildlife, Wild Horse Bands and Spectacular Scenery are all there for the lover of photography!"
...and even the opportunity to stay on-site at one of their beautiful lodges!
Can you imagine getting to wake up to horses outside your window? Heaven, right?!
The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is located at 12165 Highland Road in Hot Springs and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
