Those of us who hail from South Dakota know what a gem this state really is, but it seems as though we are often overlooked and underrated by those who have never been here. That being said, we are always interested to hear what major publications have to say about the Mount Rushmore State, which is why we were blown away by the fact that one of our iconic festivals was named one of the world’s coolest:
Recently, Thrillist released their round-up of the 17 of the World’s Coolest Festivals and Street Parties Worth Traveling For , which included our very own Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup!
Listed with the likes of Bastille Day (Paris), Cherry Blossom Festival (Tokyo), and Carnival (Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), Thrillist notes that "South Dakota may not have crossed your mind as a bucket list destination, but it’s home to one of the most American phenomenons you can ever witness."
We couldn't agree more, Thrillist!
Taking place the last Friday and Saturday of September, the Buffalo Roundup brings in close to 15,000 out-of-town visitors each year, making it one of the largest events of its kind.
In addition to just watching 1,500 buffalo go stampeding by, attendees feel the earth shake and hear the deafening sound of charging hooves, resulting in a true feast for the senses.
As if the buffalo weren't reason enough to visit, the festival also includes made-from-scratch meals, 100+ vendors, and an Arts Festival!
Custer State Park is located at 13329 US Hwy. 16A in Custer. Admission to the event is free, but a park entrance license is required.
