Do you crave a little time in the great outdoors? Fortunately, South Dakota is chockful of places to discover, including world-famous landmarks, historic trails, and explorable bodies of water, meaning there is something for nearly everyone! If you are looking for jaw-dropping views, however, there is only one place to be, which is South Dakota’s Notch Trail:
Tucked away inside South Dakota's jaw-dropping Badlands National Park, Notch Trail is a 1.3-mile out-and-back trail that is deemed moderate but worth the effort!
Like many of the Mount Rushmore State's trails, Notch Trail is comprised of a solid dirt path that begins at a lower elevation but continues to climb as the trail winds along.
Tucked amidst the crags and colorful sandstone that makes the Badlands so remarkable, Notch Trail is arguably the most beautiful hike in the state thanks to not only its unique geology.
But jaw-dropping views like this!
Please note: there are no guard rails along the canyon walls (hence the incredible view!), and those with a fear of heights may not want to attempt the hike.
Once you reach what seems to be the top of the canyon, you will find a steep ladder with 50 steps that will take you higher and offer an even more astounding view of the surrounding landscape.
If you think this picture is gorgeous, wait until you see Notch Trail and its surroundings for yourself!
Both Notch Trail and Badlands National Park are open 24/7 year-round, with admission starting at $15 per person.
