At first glance, Woods Bay State Park looks like a secluded flat wilderness with plenty of space to roam and few other visitors with which to share it all. The small-ish park (it’s a mere 1,590 acres) is located in the Pee Dee Region, almost three miles to the east of Interstate 95 with an exit that is at approximately the halfway point between Manning and Florence.
But as sleepy as it appears, Woods Bay State Park is anything but boring.
A clearly marked trail has been carved through the swamp and markers and other directional indicators have been placed on the trees at eye level for those in kayaks or canoes.

For those who don't want to kayak or canoe, an 1,150-foot boardwalk allows visitors to explore the swamp on foot while keeping toes dry.

A Carolina Bay is a large elliptical impression pushed down into the earth's surface. The origin of the bays is largely unknown, although a few theories exist.
Among the first theories to emerge was that meteorites crashed through the atmosphere and fell to earth, creating the impressions. For the most part, that theory is no longer the predominant belief among scientists.
Two other theories have emerged to explain how hundreds of these Carolina Bays (both large and small) came into existence. First, during a period in history when heavy winds prevailed in southeasterly direction, the bays might have been formed. This theory would certainly explain why they all seem to have the same northeast-to-southwest orientation. And the final and most recent theory is that the bays are merely limestone sinkholes.
