Speaking of history, this walk-behind waterfall is widely believed to have been home to a clandestine moonshine operation in a bygone era. Perhaps it's because the moonshiners left behind a lot of equipment that's now decaying in the cave under the overhang. Getting to this unique waterfall is a bit of a challenge, but nothing that can't be overcome. It's a 2.8-mile hike that involves getting permission from a landowner. The tallest waterfall in South Carolina is also one of the most difficult to reach, but if you have the hiking skills and the stamina to get here... the rewards are tremendous. The trail is rated moderate and is 2.5 miles each way. (Also, it's not usually as crowded as the above photo, which shows a hiking group enjoying the hard-earned spoils of their trek.)

Last but certainly not least on our list of the best hikes in South Carolina to waterfalls is Wildcat Wayside. Discover a nature trail that doles out three different waterfalls and some other great sights as you make your way up a series of steps to this three-part waterfall located on the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway (SC-11). The third, and lowest, waterfall in the trio is even visible from the road if you don't want the challenge of climbing up to the other two levels. Head here in warm weather and enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the lowest fall. (Note: Part of the trail to the uppermost fall may be closed due to slippery rocks, so don't go beyond the posted signs.)
