Looking for a pawsome adventure to take with your pup this season? Whether you and your pal are in the mood for an extended road trip through South Carolina’s most beautiful destinations, or barking for a more laidback approach to enjoying the Palmetto State, SC has you and your furry BFF covered! In fact, when it comes to pet-friendly getaways, we’re spoiled with choices here. From dog-loving restaurants and pup-friendly hiking trails to neighborhood dog parks around every corner, there are endless getaways to sniff out ! But for a sweet day spent in the Great Outdoors without the long trek, Wannamaker Park has all the fixings for a perfect outing for both you and your pup.
Wannamaker County Park is one of Charleston's largest parks, spanning well over 1,000 acres.
Diverse woodland and wetland areas make this a unique destination in the heart of Lowcountry.
Tucked on the west side of this expansive park is a pup paradise with some shiny new upgrades to enjoy! Features include a dog wash area, canine-friendly water fountains, and fenced green spaces for pups to run and fetch, leash-free.
The new dog-only splash fountain, Splash Paw, is a definite hit during the dog-days of summer.
And the wide open grass areas are thoughtfully separated for large and small dogs to safely get their zoomies out!
Healthy, well-behaved, vaccinated pups are free to frolic through the dog park from 8 a.m. to sunset. To keep the area safe and tidy, it's important that all two-legged visitors clean up after their four-legged companions!
But this park isn't just for the dogs! Wannamaker is all about nature, and features a fantastic blend of activities for families and pets alike to have some outdoor fun in every season.
Here, you'll find multiple paved and boardwalk trails to explore. That means you, your best hiking buddy, and the whole family can get an adventure fix without ever leaving Charleston!
These short, easy biking and walking paths meander through the trees and along the water.
You're sure to spot alligators, turtles, deer, and other exciting wildlife on your stroll! Of course, you know your pup best, so please use your best judgment on whether or not to explore these areas.
The main loop trail begins at the park office. You will circle the central lagoon, as well as see multiple unmarked spur trails that weave through shady wooded areas filled with pine, sweet gum, and oak.
Restrooms, bike rentals, and other necessities are available at the park center.
For a longer, quieter adventure with your pup, the Wannamaker North Trail provides five different loops, including an eight-mile trek for the more experienced hiker.
A large ridge on the longest trail also a favorite among mountain bikers in the area. The trailhead is just off Westview Boulevard in Goose Creek, although only part of it runs through Wannamaker County Park.
While the lagoon is off-limits to pups for safety purposes, there's plenty of terrain to explore nearby!
Of course, for two-legged visitors to Wannamaker, the entertainment options are nearly endless as well. You'll find a seasonal water park (Whirlin' Waters), disc golf, fishing areas, multiple playgrounds, picnic and special event areas, activities for the kids, and much more available throughout the year.
Pups are allowed to accompany pet parents throughout the park, with the exception of the water park, as long as they are leashed (six-foot maximum).
Be sure to keep an eye out for annual Dog Days, where canine guests get the water park to themselves, and regular Yappy Hour special events! Bonus activity: outdoor movie nights!
Finally, when both dog and human are tuckered out, watching the light fade over the water is a perfect way to end the day.
How's this for a picture-perfect spot?
