Moonshine Falls is located in Greenville County just west of Cleveland and in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. This gorgeous freefall veil powers 40 feet over a huge hunk of granite and onto a slab where it shoots out almost horizontally before splashing into the pool below. It's one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the upstate.

Moonshine Falls was appropriately named. The big granite outcropping at the top of the falls forms a huge sheltered cave-ish area underneath that was the clandestine hideaway for a working moonshine operation some time ago. Remnants of the still can be found in the cave and around the area.

The granite overhang creates quite an expansive cave. And the sound of the water crashing over the top onto the slab and then into the pool below is mesmerizing.

Getting to this walk-behind waterfall in South Carolina can be challenging. The easiet and most direct path to the falls requires permission to cross the private property of Asbury Hills Camp. More information on how to reach them can be found at this link. Some suggest that at times you may also need a gate code from the camp.

Once you have permission, it's a 2.8 mile hike to the waterfall. Print directions and bring them with you, as the trail is marked with some quirky things, like a big rock pile with a bright red line. In addition, one of the trails you will be following has some other trails leading from it. If you don't have precise directions it could be easy to take the wrong path.
