South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
In the spring we take time to stop and smell the roses, and in the fall we take time to stop and admire the incredible displays of autumn color all around. The amazing thing about fall foliage is that it’s everywhere, while the colors of spring tend to be simply pops of color here and there. As you plan for where to enjoy nature’s artwork during the fall season, consider this under-the-radar spot that offers some of the most beautiful fall foliage in South Carolina!
The Dismal Loop Trail is located in Caesar's Head State Park in the small upstate town of Cleveland. And although you would never know it from this particular snapshot from the trail, it's considered a very strenuous hike.
In fact, it's such a difficult trail that a warning has been posted for hikers! The trail has some steep descents and a huge elevation change of 1200 feet. A hiker even had to be rescued following an injury on the trail one year.
The trail has even been recognized by Travel + Leisure as a top fall hike in North America! Look up, down, and all around for beautiful, vivid fall hues.
The trail through the incredible fall foliage is just over 7.5 miles long and can take 4.5 hours to complete on average. If you've never hiked across a suspension bridge before, this is your chance.
All along the way, you'll get to enjoy the views of some of the best South Carolina fall foliage. Take it all in since there's such a brief window in time we get to enjoy this part of the fall season.
