You have to love it when you try a new restaurant and have an absolutely amazing experience. Imagine stumbling upon an underground eatery here in South Carolina that looks and feels like you’re in a cozy cellar pub in Europe! And that’s not all you’ll discover at this unique place to dine…
You'll likely discover that you actually love Belgian food! If you've never tried it, then this is the one place (outside of the actual country of Belgium, of course) where you can rest assured you're getting the real deal.
When most people experience The Trappe Door's food for the first time, they're usually in awe of how this unassuming — underground — restaurant located off Greenville's Main Street surprised them in the best way possible.
But once you pop through those big wooden doors on the street level and descend the short staircase down into this secret underground space, you'll see what all the fuss is about.
Down under the ground, in a space reminiscent of a European pub, is a charming restaurant whose decor has more than subtle overtones of a rustic cellar.
And if you love the atmosphere, then just wait until you peek at the food on the tables as you walk by them on the way to your own seat. From one of Belgium's national dishes, moules-frites (translation: mussels and fries), to many more Belgian offerings, the food here will delight you.
In addition to the flavorful creations, the presentation is also not what you may expect from an underground restaurant and pub. Once your food arrives, it may be a struggle to avoid taking the first bite until after you've snapped a perfect photo to remember the occasion.
Not exactly sure if you're up for trying something new? That shouldn't be an issue... you can find things on the menu that you'll easily recognize and that are reasonably universal dishes, like the steak frites (steak and fries) seen in this image.
What Belgian restaurant would be complete without a Belgian waffle somewhere on the menu?! The Trappe Door also serves chocolate waffle balls that'll make your mouth water before you even get a taste!
The Trappe Door is located at 23 W Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601. The bar opens daily at 3:00 p.m. and the kitchen opens for dinner beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
If you don’t spend much time in Greenville, be sure to include a short stroll down Main Street to this fantastic park that’s hiding in plain sight!
