There’s a beautiful allure between nature and pedestrian bridges. Give me a trail with a rich, green canopy overhead and an occasional long-range vista plus a few bridges and I’m all in for the adventure. But what about swinging bridges? The kind that sway in the breeze as you move across them. The kind that are held in place, mostly, by ropes or heavy-gauge wires? Are you up for crossing a swinging bridge on a trail?
Let’s take a look at three of them that are found right here in the Palmetto State:
1. Twelve Mile Creek swinging bridge
If your answer is a resounding yes, then head out to Walnut Creek Park in Lancaster, South Carolina, where you'll find a 180-foot swinging bridge that sways high above Twelve Mile Creek.
In fact, this bridge is so unique, you'll cross the border while on the bridge! Be sure to stop along the way to have your photo taken with the South Carolina state line marker!
Carolina Thread Trail - Twelve Mile Creek Trail Head, 10521 Walnut Creek Pkwy, Lancaster, SC 29720, USA
It's found along the 36 miles of trails inside the Greenway and crosses over Steele Creek. If your stomach gets weak, you might want to negotiate with the others in your party that only one person at time can be on the bridge. This could keep it a little more steady as you cross!
Learn more about the trail, here. And find out hours of operation and public admission costs to use the trails and other attractions at the Greenway at this link.
3. Raven Cliff Falls swinging bridge
If you're ready for an adventure that'll really make your stomach drop...
Head out to Raven Cliff Falls, South Carolina's tallest waterfall clocking in at 420 feet. Along the trail, you'll not only cross a super scary swinging bridge...
Raven Cliff Falls Trailhead, Geer Hwy, Cleveland, SC 29635, USA
The hike to Raven Cliff Falls is rated as DIFFICULT. Please don't attempt if you are a novice at hiking unless you have an expert hiker along in your party. Learn more about the trail from this previous article.
