Few things will rev up an appetite in quite the same way as combining some exercise with fresh air in the great outdoors. The next time you’re feeling adventurous, head to the foothills of the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains for a morning hike, followed by a well-earned, delicious meal guaranteed to refuel as well as reward your efforts. We’ve listed a few wonderful hikes below, but first… let’s talk about the food at The Hungry Hiker in downtown Walhalla.
If you're not from Oconee County and have never heard of The Hungry Hiker, that's because it just opened in December 2019.
As you may have guessed by the name, the themed decor features outdoor activities including a full canoe suspended from the ceiling. You may spot a loaded backpack on the walls, as well.
Launch the feast with something from the starter menu or a salad, or skip the appetizer and cut straight through the chase to a delectable sandwich. We were delighted to see so many items on the limited pandemic menu - and you will be, too.
This popular swimming hole is less crowded during the weekdays, so keep that in mind if you want to have it mostly to yourself.
Seeking a shorter hike? You'll find it just six miles north of The Hungry Hiker at Issaqueena Falls, a 100-foot cascade less than half a mile from the trailhead at Walhalla's Stumphouse Tunnel Park.
Hiking is a wonderful way to reconnect with Mother Nature – especially when you know there’s a delicious meal awaiting after the journey. The Hungry Hiker’s hours are normally 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and on Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Be sure to call ahead in 2020 to confirm the hours.
