South Carolina has some outstanding museums, each having its own signature of topic, size, and curation. One of them even has one of the largest and most varied collections of taxidermy anywhere. But wait, before you crinkle up your nose and say “It’s not for me,” at least scroll through the photos below. You’ll soon see that a visit to the Museum of York County in Rock Hill is like walking through a zoo where someone magically stopped time – but just for the creatures.
And for the duration of your time at the museum, you and your family will move among them, all 2,000 of them. Yes, there are 2,000 animal specimens here!
Maybe in your life you've encountered a few deer, or a fish, or maybe even a bear that have been preserved with taxidermy - the art of preserving the skins of animals in life-like forms.
But this gigantic collection of a completely benumbed zoo of creatures stretches beyond the continent to include specimens from around the world.
The enormous elephant is a fan favorite. It stands approximately 10 feet tall. While some of the animals in the museum are behind ropes or even encased in glass enclosures, not all of them are!
Kiosks next to each animal provide more information about its name and origin.

Think of it as a day at a different sort of zoo. One where you can always be assured the animals will be up front and centered for attention - every time you visit.
The bears, alone, are one of the cutest displays for taking selfies. Don't walk away without a photo of you standing between these two enormous creatures.
The Museum of York County is so much more than just a huge stuffed zoo of animals, though.
