South Carolina’s highest mountain peak is found high atop Sassafras Mountain and the views from the summit are unbeatable. From this elevation of 3,553 feet above sea level, the tower on top of Sassafras Mountain doles out 360-degree views to anyone who hikes the few hundred yards from the parking area to the tower’s observation deck, which adds another 14 feet to the final elevation.
On a clear day, visitors to Sassafras Mountain can see 30-50 miles in all directions with unobstructed views that may take your breath away.
The new tower was specifically placed precisely on the state line so you (and I) could purposely stand in both states at once and get a photo like this.
If you prefer to hike to the summit rather than drive, there are several challenging and rather lengthy ways to get here.
A 17-mile trail leads from Table Rock. It's rated as difficult by AllTrails.com and recommended only for experienced hikers. Two other trails, both rated moderate clock in at 9.1 miles (Pinnacle Lake trail), and the 2.9 mile trail to Whiteoak Mountain.
