South Carolina is such an amazing place to live and work and raise a family. When we were putting this article together about amazing things in the Palmetto State we found it very difficult to list only “one” item per letter. But we gave it our best shot. See what you think…
A is for the Ace Basin
The Ace Basin is located about 45 minutes south of Charleston. Three main rivers and several streams converge in this area comprised of 1.1 million acres of diverse water habitats. Pick a day or a weekend and enjoy the Ace Basin. You can hunt, fish, kayak and find comfort in the fact that people are behind the scenes right now working hard to ensure the entire Ace Basin is protected from development for years to come.
B is for Beaches
South Carolina is full of beaches that are beautiful any time of the day and any time of the year. How many SC beaches can you name?
C is for Chattooga River
The Chattooga is a popular spot for whitewater rafting and even kayaking. But you'll want to take a guide if you're not on an advanced level in either sport.
D is for Diversity
Not just in race, culture and religion but in landscape, terrain and weather. Cross this point into South Carolina with snow under your feet and in 4 hours you can change into your bikini and sit on one of our beaches.
E is for Earthquakes
South Carolina experiences 10-15 minor earthquakes a year. But there hasn't been a major earthquake in South Carolina for more than a hundred years. This map released in 2015 by the USGS shows the entire state is a hotbed for a potential strike resulting in damages to buildings sometime in the next 50 years.
F is for Fresh Seafood
Enough said. Am I right?
G is for Grits
Grits with Shrimp, Grit Cakes, Grits in a bowl for breakfast. Grits are a staple here in South Carolina.
H is for Hurricanes
Hurricanes are a force never to be reckoned with regardless of which part of the state you live in. From June 1 until Nov. 30 each year have your "go box" packed and your supplies ready for when your return.
I is for Isoprene
Ever wonder what makes the Blue Ridge Mountains BLUE? Most people look at that photo and think it's foggy but it's not. It's a common organic compound called Isoprene, released by the trees in huge amounts, that alters the way light gets filtered to the plants below, and creates the most beautiful blue color.
J is for John C. Calhoun
Vice President of the United states from 1825 - 1832 and born in Abbeville District in 1782. He's buried in Charleston.
K is for Kids with Kites on the Beach
Priceless.
L is for Love
Forget that "other" state to the north...South Carolina is for LOVERS.
M is for Museums
....and not just the normal kind they have in every state. Check out these
odd themed museums in South Carolina.
N is for "No See Ums"
Scientific Name: Culicoides ceratopogonidae. These pesky vermin are everywhere and they're stealthy. Usually you don't even know they're there until you've been bitten.
O is for Oyster Roasts
Oyster Roasts are a great social activity. Especially when the oysters are hot and tasty. Don't forget your oyster knife and glove!
P is for Palm Trees
Palms are abundant in South Carolina, with more than 8 varieties growing around the state. In addition to the palms that are in the ground, the current South Carolina state flag was adopted in 1861 and carries a palmetto tree under a crescent.
Q is for the SC Quarter
Released in the year 2000 the South Carolina quarter depicts the Carolina Wren, an outline of our state and a Palmetto Tree. Nice.
R is for Rivers
We found a
list of 77 rivers in South Carolina. That's a whole lotta fishing, swimming, canoeing, rafting, kayaking.....!!
S is for Sassafras Mountain
You'll love the view from up here! You can see four states at once. At 3,560 feet, it's the highest point in the whole state. You'll also love that you can drive most of the way there and then walk a short distance from the parking lot to the overlook. Directions
here.
T is for Table Rock State Park
It's also for "Take a Bow" once you've hiked up to this vantage point. The climb up to the top of Table Rock is 3.6 miles and steadily uphill, ascending 2200 feet. But no pain, no gain. It's totally worth it.
U is for Union
South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union, thus kicking off a series of events that would result in The Civil War.
V is for Valor, Then and Now
This is Private Amos Guise of Co. H, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Regiment, in uniform with canteen. The photo was taken between 1862 and 1865.

Just do it. And if you live near the beach, then just do it MORE OFTEN.
X is for (e)Xtreme Humidity
Again. Enough Said. 🙂
Y is for Yellow Jessamine
The state flower. Mmmm.
Z is for Zoos!
We love our zoos, aquariums and animal farms. Aiken, Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Orangeburg, Rock Hill, Spartanburg and Walterboro all have at least one of them (zoo, aquarium or animal farm.)
Such a short list for such a huge, wonderful state. But, if we listed them all, then the article would be as long as the state itself! So we’re counting on you, our readers, to fill in the gaps.
