Here in South Carolina, there is no shortage of weekend-worthy day trip destinations. Cities such as Charleston and small towns like Beaufort are often at the top of our itinerary wish lists. Yet, we’d argue that it’s the off-the-beaten-path destinations that are equally as rewarding. One example is Aiken. Aiken was established as a railroad town in the 1800s and was the conclusion of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Companies' line between the Savannah River and Charleston. At the time the line was built, it was the longest in the country!
It's fascinating to think that railroad tracks once ran through downtown Aiken, as today, you'll find beautiful parks, one-way streets, squares, and fountains.
Visitors have noted that it's a bit tricky to navigate the streets of downtown Aiken with the unique rules of the circles and squares. There's even a local expression, "Circles go, squares no," to help folks remember.
Aiken is famous for its designation as South Carolina's thoroughbred country. In the late 19th century, it was the place where many equestrians would spend the winter. Today, the town sees an abundance of thoroughbred races, polo, and steeplechases.
