South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
When it comes to closely-guarded secrets, we may think primarily of military matters, things related to national security, for example, or very personal issues that individuals may keep almost completely to themselves. Secrets are fascinating and automatically, by nature, pique our interest and curiosity. We like such a challenge as solving a mystery, breaking out of an escape room, or finding out the secret! How possible that is, though, depends on a variety of factors, including where the secret is held. And we have an island in South Carolina that holds a secret you just may be surprised by!
Daufuskie Island is the southernmost inhabited barrier island of South Carolina. Beyond it are Turtle Island and then the southernmost tip of the state, the uninhabited Jones Island.
One of the most beautiful, charming, and mysterious places in the entire state, Daufuskie Island is accessible only by ferry or possibly charter helicopter ride by The Adventure Center of Hilton Head, according to a 2018 update on its Facebook page.
And thus, Daufuskie Island Rum was born! Now, the big closely-guarded secret is this special drink's recipe. The unique flavors keep everyone who try it guessing as to what the magical nine-ingredient combination must be!
Isn't the vodka "mascot" a cutie?! She's the dog of the owner, Anthony Chase, whose been called a "rum genius," and his wife.

Having grown up on multiple Army bases, Anthony has a strong sense of national pride and a commitment to ensuring all of the distillery's spirits are 100% American-made. Even these oak barrels used for aging are from South Carolina.
Get the recipe for this mojito on the Daufuskie Island Distillery Facebook page for National Mojito Day (July)! You may also want to stock up with spirits from the distillery for World Rum Day, also in July, and Vodka Day in October.
