The Palmetto State has a variety of places to get high above the earth to see some gorgeous views (Pretty Place Chapel and Caesars Head State Park, for instance). But a long-anticipated new overlook tower atop the highest peak in South Carolina has been in the planning for more than a decade. It began construction in the last two years – and it just opened on top of Sassafras Mountain with a 360-degree view you’ll want to see!

The elevation at Sassafras Mountain is 3,553 — plus 11 feet for the new observation tower that delivers astounding views of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. On a clear day you can expect to see 30-50 miles in any direction.

Sassafras Mountain is the highest peak in the Palmetto State, but it's not entirely ours: the North Carolina/South Carolina state line runs right through the middle of the peak and the new platform, encouraging our neighbors to the north to come on over and have a look at our marvelous view!

A road leads all the way up the mountain to a parking area where a paved path winds up to Sassafras Tower. The gravel parking lot, along with the paved walkway and a ramp make the new structure accessible to those who may be mobility-impaired. Restroom facilities are conveniently located next to the parking area.

How soon can you go check it out?!

It’s located a short, scenic drive from Pickens. To reach Sassafras Tower, head to the community of Rocky Bottom on US 178. Turn right on F. Van Clayton Memorial Highway and go 4.7 miles to the end of the road. The gravel parking area is on the left. It’s open from dawn to dusk. Parking and admission are free.
