The Riverwalk Trail In South Carolina That Leads To An Island

How often do you have an opportunity to hike a trail that takes you to a beautiful island? It sounds like a too-good-to-be-true scenario, kind of like a dream, right? Oh, but it isn’t! You may be a bit surprised that we’re talking about the Saluda Riverwalk trail in South Carolina here, but that’s because it’s only been in the last several years that getting to the island has been possible.

The Saluda Riverwalk trail is just over seven miles out-and-back, and it's an easy, paved or boardwalk hike, making it a great option for those with strollers or in wheelchairs.

It's also an absolutely gorgeous hike that runs along a portion of the Saluda River.

Saluda Riverwalk Trail in South Carolina Leads to Boyd Island — There are benches and picnic tables along the way if you need or want to stop for a moment to rest, eat a snack, or just take in the unforgettable views.

Towards the end of the hike, you reach the bridge that was installed in June 2018 providing access to Boyd Island, where the trail continues in a loop around the island.

At the bridge, you'll see decorative metal art on each side that was inspired by the amazing and rare Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies we're so blessed to get to enjoy each year in the Spring.

And even though the best place to see them is along the Landsford Canal Trail, which showcases the world's largest population of these beauties, they are also found in the Saluda River.

Boyd Island is actually positioned at the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers. You can fish and swim at the sandbar at the tip of the island.

Called "The jewel of the Saluda," The Sanctuary at Boyd Island is not yet complete, with plans by The Boyd Foundation, who funded the bridge, to add a gazebo and some sculptural pieces that depict native wildlife.

It's a seven-acre peaceful, serene area where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of life, even if only just for a few hours.
