Most people don’t realize that Oconee County in South Carolina is home to more than 150 waterfalls. But it is! And perhaps the most rewarding waterfall hike during the warmer months is the two-mile journey through the forest that ends at a waterfall that spans 100 feet across the Chauga River. Pair an early morning hike with a swim day when you hike to Riley Moore Falls, near Long Creek.
Turn an ordinary hike into an exhilarating (and refreshing) adventure on this Upstate trail to a 12-foot-tall waterfall that spills, cascades, and swiftly tumbles over a wide rock ledge on the river.
The hike to the waterfall is for the most part, a breeze.
It's 1.9 miles in and mostly downhill - which means it's uphill coming back.
Park on the highway and then walk a short distance down a service road until you see the sign for the trail.
From high above, the view is extraordinary and the sound of the water gushing over the rocks on this falls that spans the full width of the river is nature's soundtrack for your day in the water.
A sandy beach makes a wonderful spot to huddle with the kids when not in the water. Bring a picnic, but don't forget the garbage bag to haul your trash out at the end of the day.
It's important to leave places like this better than we found them.
Most people make a complete day trip out of this special place deep in the forest in Oconee County.
Keep in mind that the best way to avoid the crowds is to plan your visit on a week day instead of a busy, beautiful weekend.
