South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Oh, sports fans! Have we got a treat for you! Not only is J. O’Gradys a perfect spot for watching a game or meeting up afterward, but its decor and menu also celebrate the world of sports with all kinds of fun and interesting memorabilia as well as menu items named after athletes and coaches who’ve left their mark there. It’s definitely one of the best restaurants in Sumter, South Carolina, especially for the sports-obsessed.
J. O'Gradys is a wonderful American restaurant in Sumter's downtown area, located on South Main Street.
Since you can enjoy the outdoors the majority of the year in South Carolina, one of the best things about this Sumter restaurant is you have the option of dining on the patio with views of the city's Centennial Plaza, with a clock and fountain.
This spot is also a paradise for all who love sports. From its menu to its decor, J. O'Gradys features over 100 photos, jerseys, sandwiches, and other types of memorabilia honoring Sumter's sports Hall of Famers.
For example, along with this set of Freddie Solomon gear, the menu features the Fabulous Freddie sandwich, which comes with your choice of beef, chicken, or black bean burger topped with lettuce, guacamole, pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo, and sour cream. We enjoyed our lunch at this wonderful restaurant at the table by this jersey.
Across from the table, I noticed the baseball bat hanging on the wall by the windows, because it was different from the multitude of photos and jerseys everywhere.
The jersey of William Caleb "Cale" Yarborough hangs by the bar. Not the only famous person born in Timmonsville, one of South Carolina's smaller towns, Yarborough got his start in sports in football on the Sumter South Carolina Generals football team before he began racing in 1957. His goal was to become a NASCAR star, which he accomplished in 1965 when he won once and finished in the top ten 34 times!
It would be fun to visit the restaurant during a slower time for business when you could move around different parts of the eatery while waiting for your meal and look more closely at all of the memorabilia.
Take a look at the J. O’Gradys Facebook page for more information and restaurant updates. Check out the charming 1912 Bed and Breakfast or book a Vrbo and make it an overnight trip to enjoy this must-visit restaurant in Sumter. You’ll enjoy exploring the city while you’re there!
