Avid South Carolina hikers know the Palmetto State has some trails that are more of a challenge than others. Whether it’s a matter of skill or simply endurance over an especially long distance, some hikes can be a bit more demanding than others. Without fail, this beautiful bridge hike will hold your attention – for more than one reason.
The hike to Raven Cliff Falls is one of the most challenging hikes you can attempt in South Carolina. Three additional navigational turns onto other trails makes this hike a looped adventure through a lush forest.
At more than 320 feet high, Raven Cliff Falls is one of the highest falls in South Carolina. It drops sharply over a cliff and can be seen from a viewing platform along the trail. But that's not the end (or even the beginning) of this outdoor adventure.
Just to be clear, the bridge over the top of Raven Cliff Falls does not give you a shot of the waterfall, except the very top of the cliff. But the bridge itself is astounding and is an added bonus, making this a one-of-a-kind combined waterfall and bridge hike in the Palmetto State.
Start out on Raven Cliff Falls Trail (trailhead located within Caesars Head State Park), then take a short connector trail (#14 Gum Gap/Foothills Trail) to the Natureland Trust Trail #14. Continue to the Dismal Trail #12 which loops back to Raven Cliff Falls. The last segment (Dismal #12) has the most elevation gain and can be very strenuous, including a ladder or two. You can always reverse the order to tackle the hardest part first.
The suspension bridge hike at Raven Cliff Falls is not suited to children or dogs. Only experienced hikers should attempt to make the full journey. Bring plenty of water and food. This hike can take a full day. Be sure to leave early enough to return to your car before the sun goes down.
