The Palmetto State is a treasure trove of eateries that will change the way you feel about food. Additionally, you can always tell if a restaurant is fantastic by how many people are willing to wait just to get a table. After one visit to Poe’s Tavern, you’ll not only be glad you waited patiently in line to be seated but also you’ll have a new favorite go-to place for the most creative, delectable burgers around.
Although Poe's has locations now in North Carolina and Florida, the original Poe's Tavern is located right here in South Carolina on Sullivan's Island.
Poe's is dedicated to the literary icon Edgar Allan Poe who was stationed at Fort Moultrie from November 1827 to December 1828. The restaurant's decor all seems to feature Poe and his work.
Poe aside, the real celebrities at this eatery are the burgers. You'll find combinations both on the menu and in the daily specials that will completely wow you — and make it worth your while to wait for a table.
From the Annabel Lee, a burger with a crab cake on top and sauce that'll melt your heart, let alone your taste buds, to The Sleeper (shown below), featuring roasted garlic bleu cheese and topped with buffalo fried shrimp, you've never seen or tasted burgers like these.
Where else have you ever had the chance order a famous PB&J burger? Who would even think to top a burger with peanut butter, grape jelly, bacon, and jalapeños? Poe's, that's who! And it's delicious. But they have much more than burgers at this island restaurant.
Their tacos will also keep you coming back. You'll no doubt love the grilled shrimp tacos with Thai peanut sauce, basil chili sauce, peanuts, and basil. Yum!
From all the Poe decor to an unforgettable assortment of burgers and other dishes, it is most assuredly worth waiting for a table at Poe’s Tavern. Enjoy inside seating, porch seating or patio seating. Poe’s Tavern is located at 2210 Middle St., Sullivan’s Island, SC 29482. If you really want to avoid waiting in line, then you could always show up before they open at 11 a.m. (seven days a week) and be the first to arrive.
