The oldest campground of record in The Palmetto State is still one of the most fun places to get away for the day – or longer. The earliest mention of the campground at Myrtle Beach State Park is found here, where, in 1955, a Commission report describes the more than 50,000 campers who arrived at the seasonal campground that year.
After the end of WWII, folks had a little more money to spend on travel — and Myrtle Beach State Park quickly became a favorite for natives and out of state visitors alike.
This image, taken in the campground around 1957, shows camping hasn't changed much over the years. But camping trailers evolved quickly once the trend caught on.
Myrtle Beach State Park may be the last undeveloped beachfront oasis along the Grand Strand, known widely for its lively attractions and fearless development.
Visitors to the park enjoy a full mile of protected beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean. Perhaps due to the small park entrance fee vs. the free beaches to the north and south, the beach here just doesn't seem to get as crowded as others.
Most sites are carefully carved into the existing flora, creating a shady canopy and private spaces. An impressive 278 campsites have full hookups, including water, electricity, and sewer. An additional 30 primitive tent sites provide a more rustic camping experience.
You won't run out of things to do at this state park. Even though busy Myrtle Beach awaits outside the gate, you may never want to leave once you've arrived and settled in.
Among the many activities to enjoy is a nature center, complete with its own butterfly garden and more. Additionally, two gift shops, a camp store, seven picnic shelters, and a popular fishing pier round out the fun things to do.
