South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
The charm and character found in older styles can leave you wondering how we ever came to believe that the newer ones are better. There is such beauty found in older churches, restaurants, and homes, too. It’s nice to discover those that have survived the test of time and have yet to be torn down or renovated to a more modern version. Sometimes they are even hidden in plain sight, such as with Northgate Soda Shop, an old-school eatery in Greenville, South Carolina that is truly a blast from the past!
You wouldn't expect to find a place like Northgate Soda Shop on Main Street in a city like Greenville, where the downtown area has undergone significant transformation through the years. Along with revitalization projects often comes replacements or updating of older establishments.
But this charming spot has stood the test of time and remains a place where you can still experience the charm of an old-fashioned eatery. It has extra parking around the back, which is always nice to find in a downtown area.
It's always fun to look at photos from way back when and to compare with how those areas pictured look now. Some changes with modernization are refreshing and welcomed, while others we wish didn't have to change.
And you even still enjoy an ice cream float at this classic spot, a treat that was invented by Robert McCay Green in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1874.
