The campground at Hunting Island State Park is right on the beach, giving you a front-row seat to marvel at the waves rolling in.
Hunting Island is a beautiful 5,000-acre barrier island off the coast of South Carolina.
The campground is so close to the ocean that you will be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves each night. Short trails lead you from the campground directly to the beach. Some campsites are shaded, while others are in full sun. The 100 campsites each include electrical and water hookups, as well as a picnic table for your use.
The state park offers five miles of pristine white sand beaches for you and your family to enjoy.
Take a swim or try your hand at fishing. The Nature Center loans out fishing rods during daytime hours for use on the fishing pier. Buy your bait and other supplies at the campground's camp store. At low tide, keep your eyes peeled to find the sand dollars that have washed up on shore.

For a fun family activity, climb the 167 stairs to the top of the Hunting Island Lighthouse.
From 130 feet in the air, take in the awe-inspiring view of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding island. The Hunting Island Lighthouse dates back to the 1800s. Today it is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that is accessible to the public. A nominal entrance fee is charged, and a gift store is located nearby.
As you pedal on, you are likely to encounter large, unique pieces of driftwood along the way. Kids can also have fun riding their bikes around the campground loop. Stop at the playground -- you can't miss it.

If you are in the area for a few days, consider a visit to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, just over an hour from Hunting Island, in Hardeeville.
Drive the refuge’s four-mile Laurel Hill Wildlife loop to spot alligators in their natural habitat, without leaving your car. Savannah, Georgia, is seven miles south of the refuge. Stroll through the city or have dinner before returning to Hunting Island for a campfire and s’mores. For a shorter excursion, drive past historic homes, visit the waterfront park, or grab a bite to eat in the town of Beaufort, South Carolina, approximately 17 miles from the campground.
