South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Every year, multiple millions of people flock to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to enjoy the sand, sea, and endless attractions, generating billions in revenue. Over 50% of adults in America say the beach is one of their favorite types of vacation. For many of us, the sights and sounds of the beach evoke nostalgic memories from our childhood vacations, time spent by the sea building sand castles, reading, sunning, or in the sea swimming or riding the waves. Watching and listening to the waves brings a sense of peace and calm to the soul. We think it’s the most South Carolina sound you’ll hear, and we’ll never tire of hearing it!
And even with so many people drawn to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has an impressive 187 miles of coastline with plenty of beach options for enjoying the soothing sounds of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Most people don't know that there's even a word for the sound the waves of the ocean make when they lash the shores: susurration. It comes from the Latin word, susurrare, a verb that means to whisper!
Studies have shown that natural water sounds activate the parasympathetic nervous system in our bodies, which helps us relax and unwind. Listening to water sounds reduces our stress levels, lowers blood pressure, and encourages a sense of calmness.
So for those of us who have had this sense that the beach is a magical place, we're not wrong. And it's kind of incredible that we can benefit in such powerful ways from taking a beach vacation and hearing the most South Carolina sound of the ocean, even if just for a day or a weekend!
But for those who may not live near the coast, you still can enjoy the beautiful rhythm in nature of the ocean. Just get yourself a set of nature sounds CDs, and you can lull yourself to sleep each night with this peaceful sound. We bet you'll sleep better!
