One of the best kept secrets in Bamberg County is hiding in plain sight right across the street from the towering two-story city hall in downtown Denmark (population: about 3,500). But rest assured, when Thursday rolls around, Nelson’s Wee Bake is anything but a secret to the locals. The parking lot displays an ongoing array of vehicles moving in and out as local area residents roll in for a taste of the sweet, home-baked goodness found at this family-owned Amish bakery in South Carolina.
Denmark, a college town, was literally added to the map in the 1830s.
It was then that the railroad line was lengthened to the town, which was then renamed in honor of a railroad official named B. A. Denmark. In 1978, Amtrak added Denmark as a service stop. The depot is seen here.
But enough with the history, right? At the moment, your taste buds (as are ours!) are more interested in the delicious pastries from Nelson's Wee Bake.
On the weekends (they're only open Thursday - Saturday, hours are listed below), Nelson's is quite the hot spot. The lights come on pretty early and the baking commences long before the doors open for business.
Of course, there are the usual sweet delights you can always expect to find at Nelson's. Their mega donuts, bear claws, apple fritters, and more sell out quickly, though, so you'll want to get there early in the day.
In addition to pastries, this Amish bakery in South Carolina also has other sweet confections, like their homemade cheesecake bites. You'll find them in a variety of flavors and, fortunately, they're small enough to try a more than one flavor!
Nelson's also creates a special of the month. The bakery is good about posting the monthly specials on their Facebook page (link below), so if you need a little coaxing to get out of bed early on a Saturday, check out their page for photos of the delectable special of the month, like these cream sticks.
Arrive during lunchtime, and treat yourself to lunch at Nelson's, too. The daily menu includes a BBQ sandwich, chicken salad, hot dogs, and sausage dogs.
Nelson’s Wee Bake is open year-round on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday only. (Holidays may affect open dates, so call head 803-793-4664 if heading to Denmark on a holiday.) The hours are Thursday and Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more and stay up-to-date on the daily/monthly specials by following the official Facebook page (be sure to select “see first” after you follow!).
When you head to Denmark for some of the sweet confections found at Nelson’s Wee Bake, be sure to bring some empty water containers and also head over to the fountain of youth known as God’s Acre Healing Springs in Blackville. It’s only 15 minutes from Denmark! Learn more from this previous article!
