Here Is The Most Remote, Isolated Spot In South Carolina And It's Positively Breathtaking
Perhaps it’s a contradiction to claim that the most remote and isolated spot in the state is located in South Carolina’s most traveled state park. However, if you’ve ever been on the beach at Hunting Island State Park then you are likely to agree. It is positively breathtaking and feels like a million miles from everywhere.
Indeed, it wasn’t long ago that Hunting Island was a million miles from everywhere as the island was only reachable by crossing on the oyster beds at low tide. When the CCC created Hunting Island State Park in the 1930s, a bridge was created and the island was officially connected to the mainland. The development of the park likely saved this island from other modern development.
Want to go somewhere remote and isolated? There are four pristine miles of beach on Hunting Island. A walk along her shore is like being stranded in the middle of the ocean, like Tom Hanks in “Cast Away.” Speaking of Tom Hanks, many of the Vietnam scenes from “Forrest Gump” were filmed right here on Hunting Island, while others were filmed on nearby Fripp Island.
Hunting Island is home to our beloved Hunting Island Lighthouse. And at least for now, it’s also home to the last of the famed cabins that have disappeared from the beachfront here, due mostly to erosion. Sadly, the one lonesome cabin still standing, nicknamed Little Blue, is set to be taken down in the very near future.
Here are some photos of this most remote, isolated spot in South Carolina. Don’t you agree it’s positively breathtaking?
The 5,000 acres that make up Hunting Island are all part of Hunting Island State Park. This is one “remote” location in South Carolina that offers easy access. The park, although it mostly feels empty, hosts 1.2 million visitors per year. It is the most traveled state park in South Carolina. However, the island still manages to feel remote and isolated.
