South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Some of the biggest considerations some people consider when looking for a place to live is quietness and safety. It’s why you’ll often notice in the information provided about homes for sale that they are located in a “quiet neighborhood,” for example. There’s enough going on in our world as we see in the news every day that we want to know where we live is a peaceful retreat. We want to be able to come home and not have to worry about unnecessary drama, if possible. The town we’re sharing with you today fits the bill as one of the safest, most peaceful towns in South Carolina.
With a population of 4,800 people as of 2020, Edgefield is a small and charming town in South Carolina, along with being peaceful. It's known as the "Home of Ten Governors," having produced ten of the state's former governors.
This proud legacy is recognized by the Ten Governors Trail, which is just under a mile long and features a granite monument every tenth of a mile commemorating the ten governors. This trail is one of the peaceful places within Edgefield, with the sounds of water as guests walk by Slade Lake.
On March 7, 2023, the Edgefield County Council honored Edgefield's leaders, citizens, and law enforcement officers, acknowledging the team effort to keep crime at bay with such success that Edgefield was the safest town in all of South Carolina for 2022.
In fact, Edgefield is considered one of the safest towns in the country among communities of all sizes (lower than 71% of America's communities), with a crime rate for both violent and property crime combined of 6 per 1,000 residents. A person's chance of becoming a victim of crime in Edgefield is one in 170.
So no matter if you're considering moving to Edgefield or visiting to participate in a special event, enjoy one of its museums or historical sites, or get away for the weekend, you can be assured you're in one of the safest places in the state while out and about in this town.
Downtown Edgefield overflows with charm and offers plenty to keep you busy, including a shopping district, local eateries, and a thriving artisan community along with all of its historical sites.
The Courthouse Square is the heart of Edgefield's downtown and has changed little in function or overall appearance and charm throughout the past 225 years.
One thing to be on the lookout for when visiting is the giant, artistic turkeys scattered about downtown Edgefield. They were placed by the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, whose national headquarters are in Edgefield as well as the Turkey Shoppe on Main Street, operated by the Federation.
Edgefield charm doesn't end when the sun sets. The town's lights create a beautiful night scene and help provide light for continued safety during evening hours.
