South Carolina has one very well-known healing spring (called God’s Acre) that people drive from all over to partake in the magical healing properties of the waters. However, there is another Fountain of Youth in the Palmetto State. In fact, not many people know South Carolina is home to a healing spring once touted as “The Saratoga of the South.” The history of a charming municipal park hidden away in a small town in the Palmetto State is as fascinating as the old Saratoga of the South spring itself. Take a peek…
The Mineral Spring Park in Williamston (population, 4,100) is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
It was here, long before the Civil War, that a farmer by the name of West Allen Williams was out tending his property one day and decided to take a nap in a field. As history goes, he dreamt of a free-flowing spring with cool water that had magical healing powers.
It didn't take long for the news of the medicinal water to spread and soon, Williams had built an entire town, a resort or sorts, around the spring. The Town of Williamston was chartered in 1852.
And the spring? It grew into the delightful centerpiece of the new town. For more than 175 years people have been congregating at Mineral Spring Park for events and family outings.
In addition to traditional facilities and picnic shelters, you'll find some fun attractions built into the park including a fun kids play area, tennis courts, an amphitheater, and a gazebo - where it's common to see a wedding on beautiful Saturdays throughout the year.
Annual events include the Pig in the Park BBQ Fest, an annual Spring Fest that includes an antique car show that's worth the trip alone, and a vintage VW van show (also worth the trip alone!).
The Mineral Spring Park in Williamston is a lovely place for a day trip. You can explore the many features of the park, or plan to attend one of the many events throughout the spring, summer, and fall. And don't miss the holiday season when the venue transforms into The Christmas Park!
And the best part? It's located just a hop, skip, and a jump from Interstate 85!
Mineral Spring Park is located on Spring Street and W Main Street in Williamston. It’s open every day from dawn to dusk. The park is a mere 15 minutes northeast of Anderson and 25 minutes south of Greenville.
Does your South Carolina town have a park that’s the centerpiece of the town? We’d love to hear about it!
