Mepkin Abbey is home to South Carolina’s only Trappist Monastery. Most of the estate is open to the public on a regular basis and you can visit.

Mepkin Abbey was begun in 1949 when the owner of the land here gifted it to Trappist Order's Gethsemani Abbey. From there, several monks traveled from the monastery in Kentucky and established Mepkin Abbey here in Moncks Corner.

That owner, Clare Booth Luce, had already established a quite extensive garden on site. That was gifted to the monastery as well.

Guided tours of the church are usually offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11:30 and at 3:00. However, starting in November there are certain dates that conflict with the Creche Festival, so regular tours are not available.
