It comes with no surprise to announce the oldest bar in South Carolina is in Charleston. Further, it’s located in a tucked away spot in one of those skinny alleys with a surface that is paved with hand-thrown bricks from long, long ago. But even if you’ve heard of this establishment, you may not be aware of the important role McCrady’s Tavern played in the history of the United States.
You see, it was here that President George Washington enjoyed a 30-course meal at the restaurant called The Long Room at McCrady's Tavern.
In May of 1791, President Washington spent a week in Charleston, then the fourth largest city in the states. In that era, McCrady's was owned by Edward McCrady. The tavern was known as a gathering place for dignitaries to discuss all things political.
McCrady's was established in 1778. Over time, it was bought and sold and served a variety of purposes before being purchased and carefully restored in 1982.
For a decade or two after, McCrady's was known as an upscale restaurant. But in 2016, the owners opened another McCradys on East Bay Street and turned this historic building BACK into a tavern.
And on Saturday and Sunday mornings, it's a terrific place to have brunch. But George Washington isn't the only famous person associated with McCrady's Tavern...
Famous Chef, Sean Brock (PBS Series, "Mind of a Chef"), known as the King of Southern Cuisine, serves as the Executive Chef and is a partner in McCrady's Tavern.
From the warm and inviting atmosphere, to the fact that this tavern is on the National Register of Historic Places and Landmarks, the oldest bar in South Carolina is worthy of a visit. Did you know the history of this popular eatery in Charleston?
And have you had the pleasure to sit in the same venue where George Washington consumed a 30-course meal? We'd love to know!
