Some of the best kinds of establishments are the ones that have been around the longest, like South Carolina’s oldest general store (you can read about that one here.) We also love it when someone breathes new life into an old business. That is exactly the case with the following general store that opened long before the Civil War. In 2012, it was converted into a charming restaurant – and the end result couldn’t be more deliciously nostalgic.
Martin's General, located on a peaceful, country road near SC-25 in Ware Shoals, is the real deal. The family-run restaurant is like a step back in time in an authentic setting with food like your mom used to make.
The setting is raw 1800s. It's as if someone plopped some tables into the middle of this old country store and left everything else intact. The walls are adorned with merchandising signs that appear nearly as old as the building. From the wooden floors, the likes of which you just can't get anymore, to the exposed beam ceiling, the building adds much to the nostalgic experience of dining at Martin's.
The menu at Martin's includes a variety of flavorful options. From burgers, to country fried steak, you're sure to discover more than one favorite dish. (If you're feeling especially nostalgic, order the fried bologna sandwich. And if you're feeling especially adventurous, order the Redneck Burrito.)
On Thursday nights, you'll enjoy some toe-tapping live music on the only night of the week the eatery is open for dinner. (It's popular with the locals, so get there early!)
It’s difficult to find old buildings that have been reborn with so much of the original integrity left untouched. Martin’s is a truly unique step back in time.
