Family fun is at your fingertips with the little-known (and free!) canopy walk found at Lynches River County Park. Walk, if you dare, from one tree platform to another on swinging bridges that sway with your movement while you hold on to nothing but the ropes on either side.
Designed to elevate visitors' experience at this 676-acre park nestled on the banks of the Lynches River, the canopy walk is both fun and a bit thrilling.
The trail begins at the Environmental Discovery Center where the treetop canopy is accessed by a rear deck at the center. Consequently, it's only open when the center is also open.
If you're afraid of heights, get dizzy when looking down at the ground from practically any height, or easily lose your sense of balance when the ground beneath you is moving, then you may want to volunteer to stay behind and keep an eye on everyone's belongings.
Each of the swinging bridges in the canopy walk leads to a tree house platform high in the air.
And there are limits to the number of people who can be on each of the bridges at one time so expect to wait for a bit on each platform if there are a lot of treetop hikers when you arrive.
Lynches River County Park has a variety of attractions to explore in addition to this daring canopy walk, including a canoe trail, a boardwalk loop trail (on the ground), a campground, and more.
The treetop trail travels from the Environmental Discovery Center to a final platform where you'll have a view of Lynches River.
The park is open year-round from 9 a.m. to sunset (closed on Christmas Eve and Day as well as Thanksgiving Day). And the canopy tour/Environmental Discovery Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Many people don't realize this epic county park was once a South Carolina state park.
