What's Left Of This Iconic Landmark In South Carolina Is About To Go Away...Forever

The good news? One of South Carolina’s most photographed and beloved landmarks miraculously survived Hurricane Matthew.

Located on Hunting Island, the icon known as “Little Blue,” or just “Lil Blue” somehow managed to make it through the storm that devastated Hunting Island, leaving South Carolina’s most visited state park in a heartbreaking pile of rubble.

And the bad news? She’s scheduled to be taken down soon – and hearts are breaking worldwide. As we spend our last few months with our beloved “Lil Blue,” here are some breathtaking photos of South Carolina’s most famous beachfront cottage.

Little Blue's home is along the shore of one of South Carolina's state parks. Reports say the already shifting shoreline at Hunting Island State Park was changed even more by Hurricane Matthew. Even the campground at the park will have to be reconfigured to accommodate the new landscape as the park recovers and rebuilds.

Little Blue, on the other hand, won't be so lucky. She's on her last legs at this park. Even before Hurricane Matthew swept in, the state announced back in April that the last "beachfront" cabin at Hunting Island would be torn down at the end of 2016.

A little over a decade ago, Little Blue was all the way up in the dunes here, her front deck only a few wooden steps up from the sand. However, erosion has forced the last standing cabin offshore. Now, the parks system believes she poses a safety threat because she sits so far from the shore and in places her pilings are exposed as much as 35 feet at low tide.

So, she's coming down soon.

So…that good news…that she made it through the hurricane? Well, it’s coupled with sad news: Little Blue lived to see another day, but not many more days. For now, she’s become a symbol of longevity; a force to be reckoned with. Little Blue is one victorious lone cabin that battled Matthew – and a whole slew of other major storms – and won.

South Carolina’s beloved and most visited state park, Hunting Island State Park, was devastated by the wrath of Hurricane Matthew. According to the latest report most of the park will remained closed until futher notice. However the nature center and a small portion of the pier will be open each day from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. More information and periodic updates about the status of the park’s recovery can be found here on their website.
