South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Taste of the South was founded in 1982 by an ambitious group of transplanted Southerners desiring to bring some “southern hospitality” to Washington, D.C. while raising funds for charities in need. Today, the annual event raises over half a million dollars each year for deserving charities in 13 southern states as well as the District of Columbia. And this is a part of the legacy of an iconic diner serving some of the best hotdogs in the upstate of South Carolina since 1946.
Loyd “Skin” Thrasher opened up Skin Thrasher’s Café in 1946, selling anything he could in a humble pool hall type of atmosphere, including short-order meals such as sandwiches, hamburgers, and the same hotdogs you can still get at Skin's today.
By the 1980s, Skin's had established a solid reputation across upstate South Carolina, and word spread into other states all across the southeast as well. Skin's even found itself in the news, with stories broadcasted about the tiny house hidden in the heart of Anderson.
As word continued to spread, Skin's began receiving national attention. Gourmet, Money, and Fortune Magazines, as well as PBS and National Public Radio proclaimed the Skin's hotdog as one of the top 10 in America, making it far more than just the upstate's best hotdog!
In 1985, Skin decided it was time to pass the business on to his two sons and son-in-law. In 1988, a second location was opened on Clemson Boulevard in Anderson, and five more were opened in the '90s: At the 28 bypass in Anderson, Clemson, Seneca, Easley, and Mauldin.
Locations in Greenville were opened in 2000 and in 2006 another location in the Anderson Hopewell community and a third in Greenville were opened.
Skin's has participated by invitation in the annual Washington D.C. “Taste of the South” fundraiser on Capitol Hill, where the south’s best foods and flavors are handpicked and served in the nation’s capital. Area charities receive the proceeds from this highly anticipated event each year. Today, Skin's continues to be involved in charitable causes and in the community ...
Skin Thrasher passed away in April of 1998, but he would be so proud to see his legacy and passion for a good hotdog and great overall experience living on through his family.
Skin's recognizes notable accomplishments of patrons. Meet Marc from Ohio who ate 16 hotdogs at the Pelham store and has been added to the wall for eating the most hotdogs at this location.
Nathan wanted his picture on the Pelham store wall, too. So he ate six hotdogs (at six years old!) and has been recognized for the 10 and under category!
Perhaps what puts Skin's best hotdogs ahead of the competition is the secret recipe homemade chili topping, with a consistency that's well packed so you're not fighting chili soup on a bun like at some places.
The locals love Skin's and those who've been getting the hotdogs there since childhood say they've got the same great taste today that they always had. Buns are also always hot and moist.
You can opt for chili chips as a side if you love the chili and would like more of it than you'll get on the hotdog!
Visit Skin’s website or Skin’s Facebook page for more information about the best hotdogs in the upstate. And consider staying in this charming cottage in Greenville County or perhaps a different Vrbo if that one’s not suitable or unavailable to have more time to explore the area!
