The Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk and Veterans Pier Hike in South Carolina is full of beautiful sights, quirky photo ops, and not just one, but several restaurants along the way if you’d like to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the area. It’s definitely not your average trail and is an option that should work for almost everyone.
The Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk and Veterans Pier is an absolutely gorgeous hike.
The "trail" begins at the paved parking lot off of US-17 Business, taking you on a paved pathway in between Wahoo's Fish House and Bovines Steakhouse. In total, it's only about a mile long out-and-back and is an easy hike.
Stop at Wahoo's Fish House either to begin your experience or as you're heading back from completing the trail. There are several other restaurants along the trail as well if you'd prefer to eat somewhere else.
It may be busy depending on the time of day and time of year you're visiting, but there are often times when the area is much less congested.
It's a wonderful spot for a scenic lunch.
There are many options for a delicious meal, whether from the menu or a daily special, such as these Grilled Beef Tenderloin and Jumbo Shrimp Kabobs served over Oven Roasted Corn and Red Potato Hash with Baby Spinach, topped with a Honey BBQ Sauce ...
... some of the best sushi you can find (guests love the grumpy roll!) ...
... shrimp and grits, a dish South Carolina is well-known for ...
... or another special, Grilled Triple Tail over Smoked Gouda Mashed Potatoes topped with sauteed Crawfish, Grape Tomatoes, and Spinach. Tripletail is a medium-sized warm-water marine fish found across the tropics. It's considered by many to be equal to or superior to red snapper or grouper because of its sweeter flavor.
After enjoying your meal, head back out to the trail, and be sure to stop at one or more of the quirky photo ops along the way, including this fun colorful octopus!
Across from Drunken Jack's, another restaurant not far from Wahoo's, you'll see Goat Island. This is a 20,000-square-foot island owned by the restaurant, which has brought goats during the warmer season to naturally maintain the island's vegetation and as fun entertainment for guests.
Sadly, due to recent developments with erosion following Hurricane Ian, the goats will not be returning for a period of time. Environmentally responsible solutions are being researched in hopes of being able to restore the island so they can one day bring the goats back home.
There is educational material along the hike if you're interested in learning more about this ecosystem.
It's a popular spot for bird-watching and fishing.
Most of the trail is a wooden boardwalk, and at the end of the trail is the veteran's pier where you can get a better view of the marshes and an opportunity to interact with visitors from outside of the area.
Visit the Wahoos Fish House website and Wahoos Fish House Facebook page for more information and updates. And be sure to check out one of the best gift shops in South Carolina that’s just across the highway while you’re there in Murrells Inlet!
