A True Hidden Gem, The 2,498-Acre Poe Creek State Forest Is Perfect For South Carolina Nature Lovers
Author and environmental activist Edward Abbey said, “Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.” Getting out into nature offers so many benefits, physically, mentally, and spiritually. When you’re looking for somewhere that perhaps you haven’t been before, a hidden gem of sorts, one area in our state that is perfect for South Carolina nature lovers is Poe Creek State Forest.

There are two cabins and a conference center available for overnight stays.

For a moderate hike, Buzzards Roost North and Cedar Creek Mountain Trail is four miles out and back with stunning views from the top, especially in the winter when unhindered by foliage. Some parts of the trail are strenuous.

Tubing in the creek or sunbathing on the sandy beach areas is also possible.

At the Piedmont Forestry Center area, where the cabins and conference center are located, a fishing rodeo for youth is held every year in mid-May. It’s free and open for youth up to age 12
