Many people find cemeteries simply fascinating. From their peaceful and quiet nature to the reminders of generations past and the beautiful artwork found among the headstones, cemeteries are a fascinating retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Or, at least MOST of them are.
But South Carolina's first and oldest municipal graveyard is a bit unusual, compared to other cemeteries found in the Palmetto State.
Springwood Cemetery, in downtown Greenville, sits in the throes of one of the busiest and most visited cities in South Carolina. Additionally, it's rumored to be among the most haunted burial grounds around.
The massive cemetery is the final resting place for more than 10,000 souls buried beneath the surface.
And some... buried above the surface! What's more, according to the City of Greenville, there are more than 2,600 bodies here that have no headstones.
If you're looking for a ghost, you'll likely find it here, where all sorts of eerie otherworldly things have been reported.
From apparitions, to orbs, footsteps, laughter, and the sounds of small children playing, Springwood Cemetery seems to be one super haunted place.
And who knows why? Maybe it's just a numbers game, afterall, 10,000 souls have passed into (and through) this municipal graveyard. Maybe some of them are stuck? Or, perhaps it's all the businesses that have grown up around this cemetery that began as a private, family-burial ground in the late 1700s.
By 1829, the cemetery was opened to the public, and from that point the size skyrocketed. Today there are 30 acres filled with gravesites, dedications, mausoleums — and spirits. Have you visited Springwood Cemetery, and did you experience anything paranormal?
Springwood Cemetery is located at 410 N Main St., Greenville, SC 29601. Access may not be available 24 hours a day.
