As the entrance to Charleston Harbor, Sullivan’s Island is a picture-perfect spot to spend a day or two exploring. This tiny town of fewer than 2,000 people is home to several historic sites, including the Mugdock Castle. When you stumble across it, you’ll swear it was ripped straight from the pages of a Harry Potter book. Let’s check it out. 

You’ll find the Mugdock Castle on the western end of Sullivan’s Island.

While the castle is not open for tours, there is a way you can spend a few nights here, which we’ll get to in a moment.
Mugdock Castle consists of two buildings, the Winter Hall and the North Tower, that are joined together by a staircase.

Don't worry, this staircase doesn't move like the ones in the films. The castle was built in 1891 and was originally the Chapel of the Holy Cross. It was built to replace another church that was destroyed in 1863 during the Civil War.
Due to its waterfront location, it's no surprise that the castle sits in close proximity to an iconic fort (Fort Moultrie) that played an important role during the Civil War.

Fun fact: it was named after a Scottish castle that was built in the 14th century that's located just north of Glasgow.
