Growing up in South Carolina has a few, let’s call them “side effects” that tend to stay with you no matter where you move or travel to in your lifetime. Some of those side effects could depend upon the part of the state in which you grew up, too. If you’ve had to move within, or even out of the state, then you probably notice a few things stick with you. Here’s a short list of the weird side effects everyone experiences from growing up in South Carolina:
1. Your hopelessly optimistic outlook makes you a bit overly friendly.
With all the tourism in South Carolina, you just used to seeing new faces. That's a good thing.
2. You learn early that "Bless your heart" has two very different meanings.
The hardest part is not looking all judgy on the rare occasion when you may say it without the best of intentions.
3. You are completely spoiled by our mountain vistas.
Especially if you grew up in this part of the state. There may be bigger mountains in other states, but there's no place like home.
4. And no other beach will ever feel as familiar to you as those here in South Carolina.
No matter where you travel (or live), the beach in South Carolina will forever hold some of your best childhood memories.
5. Speaking of the beach: you hate crowds.
And that's why you avoid the beach on the weekends and on summer holidays.
6. You're pretty much always ready for a summer downpour.
And if you're near the coast, then you know those pink boots you shelled out extra bucks for will definitely be worth their weight in gold in the next downpour that happens at high tide.
7. You may never admit it publicly, but you can be a seafood snob.
Especially if you have to travel to one of those land-locked states where the seafood all gets frozen and shipped in.
8. You choose comfort over fashion.
And sometimes find the two merge in the best way possible. Admit it: you wear sandals most of the time.
9. You know more about the Civil War than you do about the pilgrims.
Having a war take place in your own backyard (literally) will do that to ya.
10. YOU don't have an accent; but everyone else does.
(And well, bless their hearts for having that cute little accent... )
11. Your heart has a natural homing device that always knows when it's approaching home.
You know, regardless of where you live or travel, there's no place like South Carolina.
Home is where the heart is. Is your heart in South Carolina? How many of these seemed familiar to you?
