A city that’s been around as long as Charleston has more than a few ghosts. Settled by Europeans in the 1600s, the city has had a lot of residents come and go and some have stayed forever. If you’d like to meet a few of these ghostly residents, just head to where they reside – on a single outing you can experience two of the city’s most haunted sites – read on to see if you’re brave enough.
Start your adventure at the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon. This impressive structure was built in 1771 as a commercial exchange and custom house.
Today, it operates as a non-profit historic site that focuses on the American Revolution and colonial Charleston. But it’s also known for something more.
The basement held a dungeon that once housed pirates, war prisoners and slaves. Touring visitors have heard screams and felt the touch of unseen hands. Some visitors have even seen a person dressed in Revolution-era clothing. They thought he was a guide – until he disappeared!
If you’re brave enough to continue on after making it through the haunted dungeon, another haunting awaits. It’s within walking distance, as long as you’re hungry for a meal unlike any you’ve had before.
Poogan’s Porch is a Victorian Home that was converted in to a restaurant back in 1976. It features outstanding Lowcountry cuisine and it has been featured on the Travel Channel, Southern Living, and Martha Stewart Living.
Others have spotted the apparition of a woman in black. Another woman has been spotted in the glass of a mirror in the ladies’ bathroom. You may want to finish your meal quickly!
