South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
After sitting vacant for several decades, the historic Hester Store building, built in 1893 in the Easley community of Dacusville, has been re-opened as Hester General Store by a new owner. And inside this little gem of a store, you will find one of the best bakeries in South Carolina.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. From the late 1800s through the late 1900s, it had served as a family-run store that was also a centerpiece of the community where people came together to socialize.
The new owner, Katie Chaney, studied art history at Wofford College and fell in love with the building and its history from the moment she first saw it.
You can't help but feel happy enjoying one of her tasty treats in this cheerful outdoor space that has been created. The mural at the back of the building is by Sunny Mullarkey.
A strong community benefits us all and this store features grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, soups, and charcuterie in addition to her baked goods—all highlighting local South Carolina farmers and producers. From meats, cheeses, eggs, and dairy to vegetables and flowers, most of the store's provisions will come from vendors within 10 miles. And there will also be gift items from local artists available.
There are a variety of perishable and non-perishable goods such as produce, milk, beef, and pork also available — all sourced locally out of the Upstate and the Southeast areas.
Hester General Store also offers cooking classes and catering services. Check out this epic grazing table, which can be built for your special event or party!
