If you ask us, weekends are spelled f-u-n, and there’s not much that’s more fun than taking a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before or to a favorite locale you just didn’t have enough time to explore on a previous visit! Some places you may never tire of visiting. For some inspiration for the best weekend trips in South Carolina , we’ve put together some ideas that include spots in neighboring states with a reasonable drive time, as well as a few of those that will keep you within the state.
1. Asheville, North Carolina
Those who love mountain scenery will enjoy a
weekend trip to Asheville, N.C. ! There are many fun things to do there, including a visit to America's Largest Home® on a sprawling 8,000 acres. The mansion was built by George Vanderbilt in 1895 and is especially beautiful when decorated during the holiday season. There's also plenty of shopping, excellent dining, and other attractions to explore, such as the Adventure Center of Asheville, the North Carolina Arboretum, museums, and more.
Stay in this
modern mountain cabin with a hot tub, game room, and fire pit to enjoy once you get settled in for the evening.
2. Charlotte, North Carolina
Called "The Queen City", one of the
best attractions in Charlotte , North Carolina is Carowinds. But as the 15th largest city in the United States, you could never run out of things to do in Charlotte on a weekend trip there. Just a few ideas to get you started include the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Discovery Place Science Museum, and the Billy Graham Library.

3. Wilmington, North Carolina
How about spending a weekend on a houseboat at the Wilmington, North Carolina coast? Venture out to explore the 230-plus-block historic district consisting of churches, classic architecture, moss-draped live oaks, brick-lined streets, and historic homes. Also in Wilmington, you'll find the famous World War II Battleship North Carolina, named one of the
top attractions in North Carolina by USA Today. During the warmer season, take the kids to Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park for a few hours.
If it's an adults-only weekend away, be sure to visit The Fat Pelican in the evening, voted the #1 dive bar in the state and a Top 25 in the country!
4. Helen, Georgia
Take a tubing adventure along the Chattahoochie with Cool River Tubing and Adventures, the only tubing company in Helen that offers a shorter tubing trip option. Tubes with and without bottoms are available to rent, and your dog can tube with you.
5. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah, Georgia is our final weekend trip option into a neighboring state. A gorgeous city known for its manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages, and antebellum architecture, you can take a
Savannah Riverboat cruise or an Old Town Trolley Tour for an incredible sightseeing adventure. Other fun activities could include a visit to the oldest public art museum in the Southeast, the Telfair Museums, shopping on Bull Street or in the Starland District, and much more.
And for those who've been frustrated by the limited availability for attendance with the Fairy House Festival in South Carolina, you can make plans to attend the Fairy and Gnome Festival in Savannah, usually held in the spring at the
Oatland Island Wildlife Center !
Then sleep in the
Grand Victorian Home at Forsyth Park, a magical, historic mansion with a grand piano and within walking distance of restaurants and shops.
And now, we'll transition to some weekend trips to take right here in South Carolina. 6. Greenville
If you've been to Greenville before, you know it's not the type of place you can fully appreciate in a single weekend. First time visitors should make a point to visit Falls Park on the Reedy, the gorgeous 32-acre oasis centerpiece of the city that's been the recipient of multiple awards and offers a peaceful escape into nature. You could easily spend several hours exploring the park and dining at one of the restaurants surrounding the park. Next to the park, check out the
Group Therapy Pub and Playground for some indoor entertainment with options like mini golf, axe throwing, curling, and more.
One of the most fun places to eat in Greenville for couples is the Better Than Sex dessert restaurant, where first time guests are known as virgins. And for the rest of the experience, you'll have to visit for yourself! Afterwards, we recommend a stay at this
romantic treehouse .
Greenville has been ranked by Businessweek as the #5 most fun and affordable city in America, qualifying it as one of those locales you're not likely to tire of visiting. These handful of suggestions for adventure don't even really begin to scratch the surface but provide you with the best option for a romantic weekend getaway trip in South Carolina!
7. Myrtle Beach
Most people who think about South Carolina travel probably think of Myrtle Beach, with its average of almost 20 million visitors each year! It may not necessarily make the list for a weekend trip, as families often take a beach vacation there for a week. Either way, it's yet another spot that offers so much in the way of entertainment that you'd probably never run out of new things to do there either. In fact, if your primary reason for visiting is to enjoy the beach, you may not even have explored much of the other exciting attractions.
Wonder Works is one we'd recommend checking out, where you'll enjoy over 40,000 square feet of interactive fun including hands-on exhibits, simulators, scavenger hunts, a ropes course, an arcade, and more. It's located at Broadway at the Beach, which is a massive shopping and entertainment complex you could further explore when you leave Wonder Works. One of the newer restaurant and entertainment venues there called
The Hangout would be a great spot for a bite to eat. You really could spend the entire weekend right here at Broadway at the Beach!
8. Charleston
It's probably a safe assumption that most of us who live in South Carolina have been to Charleston at least once. But just like both Greenville and Myrtle Beach, it certainly is not lacking in having an abundance of things to do. We would suggest taking a weekend to visit without any definitive plans and decide once there what you want to do! Try some of the restaurants you didn't get a chance to visit in the past, take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful streets in the historic district and just take in the scenery without an agenda, per se. Sometimes when we have a strict itinerary in mind, we forget to stop and smell the roses along the way!
You also could explore some of the areas surrounding Charleston such as Mount Pleasant or the
barrier islands . This
birdhouse style Airbnb on Folly Beach would be fun to stay overnight in!
9. Hilton Head
Hilton Head Island, SC, USA
And last but not least, a list like this should include a weekend trip to America's favorite island, Hilton Head Island! You could spend the entire weekend in Sea Pines Resort, where you can walk to the top of the Harbour Town Lighthouse and visit its museum.
What an incredible view from the top of the lighthouse!
And there you have it, Friends. Which of these weekend trips in South Carolina appeals most to you and why?
